Question by : Why Does a 925 sterling silver piece of jewelry turn my skin black and no one else’s?
When I rub a piece of jewelry to my skin (especially on the top of my hand and face) it turns my skin black like a marker. You may say this is because it is not real 925 sterling silver but it happens with all sterling silver and when the same jewelry is tested on another person no one else receives black marks. Can anyone tell me what causes this, whether body chemistry or other thing and I know it is not diet or environment because my family I live with it does not happen to.

The answer is probably your personal body chemistry, although it may be a reaction to either the silver or the copper alloy which is used even in sterling silver of high quality. There is still trace amounts of copper. However, as the marks are black and not green, it’s a trouble with the silver most likely. Silver tarnishes rather quickly even in the best circumstances, especially in the presence of salt or sulfur compounds. Those may be in the foods you eat, or your general atmosphere. Things like chips, popcorn, eggs or onions, a coal fire, or some medications can also cause it to happen. So it could be from your diet, environment or your personal chemistry. You can only coat the underside which is in contact with your skin with a clear nail polish to try to solve the problem. You just have to keep doing it regularly, but fortunately clear nail polish is relatively inexpensive.
