Essential for a trip to China!,
My husband and I just returned from a 10 day trip around China. We did not go with a group and decided we wanted more information than what you get from a regular guide book. We bought this book at the last minute and read it on the plane. It’s a very short easy read. I can’t count how many times while we were there we would look at each other and comment on something that happened just like in the book! It was extremely helpful and saved us more than once. A definite must have for any China trip!

Perfect travel book!,
This little book is perfect for preparing to travel to China. It is written in a humerous way and the authors share personal experiences. Some of the little tidbits are: “Never take a black taxi.” – explains all about taxis and what to beware of. “How to stand in line and not have a cow.” – prepares you for the challenge of standing in a queue. I definitely recommend this book, especially for those who appreciate practical advice and tips rather than large tomes of history. I’m going to read it again and make some travel notes in my journal!

Great guidebook for China,
Just finished reading this guide book. It is highly recommended. Well written, lots of useful advice, and a lot of great anecdotes. I’m giving it a five star review but I do have two small critiques.
First, the authors both speak Chinese, which is great in some ways as they have a much deeper understanding of the culture. On the other hand, I’m not certain they capture the challenges waiting for someone who speaks no Chinese at all.
My second critique is that this Guidebook, and all the others I have read, assume that you are out adventuring in China on your own either for personal reasons or a business trip. Yet, I would assume that the vast majority of the people who travel to China for a vacation adventure are on a guided tour. It would have been useful if there was at least one chapter covering what to expect for those who are traveling this way. I realize that if you are on a guided tour you are essentially being baby sat, so as I read these guidebooks I wonder what, if any, of the advice in these books applies? There’s no way to tell because the author doesn’t address the question.
If the author does an update it might be nice to have a chapter devoted to what to expect if you are on a guided tour, versus the off-the-beaten path adventures covered in the book.
